Drama plays a vital role in building confidence, creativity, and communication at The Old School Henstead. Through improvisation, physical theatre, role play, puppetry, and lessons in voice projection, movement, mystery, tension, and acting techniques, pupils learn to express themselves, collaborate, and connect with others. Our approach encourages self-assurance while nurturing empathy, resilience, and respect.
Pupils deepen their use of role, scripts, and improvisation to explore themes and characters, while creating and structuring dramatic work with narrative, tension, and mood. They develop technical skills such as voice control, movement, gesture, and spatial awareness. Appreciation is also a focus, with pupils watching, discussing, and evaluating performances to build critical understanding.
Drama in context includes exploring plays from different periods, including Shakespeare, and understanding various dramatic genres and styles. A half-term Shakespeare focus inspires pupils with classical literature, and all children participate in the much-loved Summer Show — a whole-school celebration of teamwork and self-expression, produced to a high standard by our talented staff.
We also offer LAMDA tuition, supporting pupils in developing polished performance and public speaking skills. (See LAMDA overview)
