Specialist Medical Support Assistance Vacancy
Role: Specialist Medical Learning Support Assistant
Location: Henstead, Suffolk
Salary: HLTA Pay Band
Contract: Part-time (2 full days per week)
Start Date: TBC
What we are looking for: This is a unique and special post which provides learning support and medical care for a child who joined The Old School Henstead in September 2026. The child has a rare condition called Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome. They require a ventilator (breathing machine) at night and at certain points during the day. Our pupil requires constant monitoring due to this complex breathing condition, and therefore always require one-to-one specialist support in school. They also require additional learning support to allow them to fully access the curriculum and have a fulfilling school life.
We are looking for an individual to complete our team of Specialist Medical Learning Support Assistants (SMLSAs), who provide one-to-one support every school day between 8.15am and 4.15pm. This vacancy is a job share with one other SMLSA for 2 full days a week, The Specialist Medical Learning Support Assistants are expected to cover each other during sickness absence and providing support to the specific child will always be their priority.
Some experience in medical care would be useful, but for candidates who present the right qualities for the role, all training will be provided. Experience of supporting learning for pupils in Key Stage Two would be preferred. The ability to prioritise the needs of this specific child, above all else, is essential.
A period of training, shadowing and familiarisation will be provided (dates in June and July). Medical care will include using medical equipment, maintaining ventilation, clinical observations and strict record keeping. The successful candidate will work under instruction from the class teacher with regards to the learning aspects of the role, however, they will be expected to be self-sufficient and responsible for the medical care aspects of the role. The medical care is specific to the individual child and there will be a lot to learn, so we are looking for candidates with commitment to the role and the training that is involved. The role will be extremely rewarding for the right candidate.
Without dedicated staff to look after the child’s medical needs, the child is not able to attend school, and therefore it is very important that the chosen candidate is prepared to provide cover when needed, which may be at very short notice.
The person appointed will be well supported by the Headteacher and the staff team, as well as the medical professionals involved in providing medical care for the child. There will be other trained staff on site, but the postholder will manage and make decisions on the complex medical needs.
