Understanding the World

Understanding the World
Children need to solve problems, make decisions, experiment, predict, plan and question in a variety of contexts. They need to explore and find out about their environment and people and places that have significance in their lives. Children are developing their knowledge, skills and understanding, that help them to make sense of the world. Work covered here forms the foundations for later work in science, design technology, history, geography, RE and Information Communication Technology – ICT.
Children have daily access to a computer in the classroom and use laptops to enhance their early ICT skills. In Reception half termly units of work are:

  • Ourselves
  • Sound, colour, light
  • Materials
  • Living things – animals
  • Living thing – seeds and plants
  • Homes
