Literacy
Confidence in literacy is vital in ensuring that every Henstead child makes excellent progress. Through synthetic phonics – Jolly Phonics – children quickly gain letter, sound and formation correspondences. This enables them to begin reading using a range of books and schemes as is appropriate. The core reading scheme we use is the ‘Oxford Reading Tree’. Children are encouraged to have a go at hearing and recording sounds in words, to become independent writers from the outset and to encourage creativity. Children learn tricky words – which cannot be sounded out – and high frequency words. Some children may begin to have high frequency words as spellings.
